The diagram below gives an indication on how AMANDLA intends to develop youth leaders and peer-educators to prepare them to become positive role models and leaders for young people living in similar circumstances.
Step 1 – The focus is on the leadership team as a group with the specific aim that they experience as a group what they will later be teaching to other groups as they progress along their developmental curve.
Step 2 – Skills learnt and experienced in Step 1 are enriched and further established with the main objective to facilitate the transition from being a participant to being the facilitator of group activities.
Step 3 – The objective is for the youth leaders to apply the facilitating and leadership skills that they have learnt and give them an introduction to event management and administration. At this stage, there is also a focus on practical employment skills such as administration and budgeting in addition to CV and proposal writing.
Step 4 – The aim is to prepare the youth leaders for life after high school with mentoring, career workshops and assistance with gaining internships before support with job and bursary applications.
During this four year programme AMANDLA closely evaluates the young leader’s performances as well as their academic achievements. If necessary AMANDLA supports the young leaders with supplementary tutoring programmes, assists them in finding part-time jobs and organises career guidance programmes.

AMANDLA's target demographic is youth staying in residential childcare facilities in South Africa. Exact figures on how many youth are currently placed in residential facilities is not available. However, according to the Children Count ZA institute 18.6% of all children in South Africa are orphaned which does not include children in need of care due to alternative circumstances.
