In addition to the principle objective of equipping young people with leadership and facilitating skills, the youth leadership programme aims to:
- Create positive role models and leaders for other young people and raise awareness amongst the young people to stand up for themselves and their rights;
- Deal with gender inequality, break down cultural barriers and have young leaders with a wider perspective on the world around them in order to deal with important issues within their communities;
- Provide mentoring and guidance for young people and encourage them to generate their own plans and problem solving skills so they understand they have the ability to make a difference, not only to their lives, but within the wider community;
- Establish young leaders who are well trained and skilled youth coaches, in addition to being aware and well informed about the importance of education and the different options and opportunities that passing through the educational system can bring
AMANDLA's target demographic is youth staying in residential childcare facilities in South Africa. Exact figures on how many youth are currently placed in residential facilities is not available. However, according to the Children Count ZA institute 18.6% of all children in South Africa are orphaned which does not include children in need of care due to alternative circumstances.
