AMANDLA extended its positive impact in 2010 through expanding the Football League Programme, which includes now seven leagues for girls and boys, involving more than 2000 young people from more than 30 facilities and disadvantaged communities in Cape Town every week for the duration of the football season. Through special rules as well as the AMANDLA Fair Play System, the leagues’ set up is used to emphasize a developmental and educational aspect of football.
There are various pre-requisites for the young people who wish to participate in the football leagues programme and only those who comply with the following rules are allowed to play:
- They must be attending school regularly
- They must not be using drugs
- Street children must have spent at least the previous night in a shelter
AMANDLA has implemented a Fair Play System so that teams can earn or lose points, in addition to the points they get for a win or draw, depending on their conduct and community outreach work in their respective communities. During the match points can be earned through good sportsmanship/behaviour and teamwork. Points are lost for undisciplined behaviour such as swearing, complaining and fighting. This system has proved to be a key factor in drawing in participants, as teams can be winners regardless of their footballing ability. Not only does it encourage positive behaviour, but also builds self esteem for all young people involved. The Fair Play System further rewards community outreach activities and positive role modelling as the community outreach activities are organised and implemented by AMANDLA Senior Youth Leaders.
As an organisation, AMANDLA places great importance onto the fair play aspect of sport. For this reason we developed the AMANDLA FAIR PLAY SYSTEM where teams can also score fair play points in every game and have a chance to move up the fair play table in this way. Each team starts a game with 10 points throughout the game point can be added or deducted. Beyond this we established a special set of rules such as every child participating in AMANDLA programmes must attend school regularly, attend football training weekly and be clean of drugs.

AMANDLA's target demographic is youth staying in residential childcare facilities in South Africa. Exact figures on how many youth are currently placed in residential facilities is not available. However, according to the Children Count ZA institute 18.6% of all children in South Africa are orphaned which does not include children in need of care due to alternative circumstances.
